Mineral Oil Analysis

The sampling, testing and analysis of mineral oil, silicon fluids and synthetic esters which insulate high voltage equipment such as transformers, tap changers and switchgear is a critical part of a regular maintenance regime to determine their physical integrity and general health. Further tests can be completed to determine the presence and levels of contaminants from which trained engineers can deduce potential causes for concern, a fault's location, lifecycle stages and ultimately the potential for unit failure. These methods offer a cost effective solution to support the need for more invasive inspection and specialist testing that may identify the need to repair or replace equipment.

Physical Testing
The most critical of these tests identifies the integrity of the insulating medium for moisture content (ppm) and dielectric strength (kV), but also the acidity (mgKOH/g), physical appearance, colour, odour and contaminants.
 
Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA)
The presence of gases such as Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide & Monoxide, Hydrogen, Methane, Ethylene, Ethane, and Acetylene are common; however it is the comparative levels between certain gases that identify potential fault conditions, hot spots or internal arcing.
 
Furfuraldehyde (FFA)
By testing the degradation of insulating paper from the core and windings of power transformers and reviewing the results along with historical data; TPPS Ltd can ascertain the potential life of a transformer and offer asset management strategies to safeguard operation until replacement equipment can be sourced.
 
Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
PCBs are a carcinogenic contaminant often found within the mineral oil of equipment manufactured before the late 1970s. Whilst there is no direct adverse affect on equipment itself; it's classification as a hazardous substance requires specialist handling and disposal if certain levels are present.
